FFMPEG comprises the following libraries for conversion from one formats to another: (1*) libavcodec is a library containing all the FFmpeg audio/video encoders and decoders. Most codecs were developped from scratch to ensure best performances and high code reusability.

(2*) libavformat is a library containing parsers and generators for all common audio/video formats.

Thanks Tom,I was looking for your command for ages

Works great!

For those who want to know: I had problem with encoded .flv from .avi… I typed simple commands like -i blabla.avi … -f flv blablaout.flv.. That worked but not for all .avi videos (!?). Some .avi videos compiled nice but couldnt seek video or control it (JW video player). But now, with tom’s command everything work great! chhers!

This is my base; when I encode for streaming content for the web. It’s blazingly fast, and content will be small.

ffmpeg -i inputfile -bug autodetect -acodec libfaac -ac 2 -ab 64k -ar 22500 -idct h264 -flags2 fast -sws_flags mmx2 -vcodec libx264 -vpre libx264-faster -f flv output.f4v

I ended up compiling all the packages by hand. Either that or switching distribution, which I can’t.

gcc flags was:

-O3 -mmmx -msse -mfpmath=sse -ffast-math -funsafe-loop-optimizations -funsafe-math-optimizations -fweb -frename-registers -fforce-addr -maccumulate-outgoing-args -momit-leaf-frame-pointer -funswitch-loops -fstack-protector

its a friend of mine ( ha he actually told me to follow up this comment ), but it comes in handy for me. particularly when the only available format is quicktime, because im not installing that bloatware for one off vids i want to watch.

its only not worked once for me, but i dont use it all that often

then dload the video back locally (theres a direct link option), then i delete it. theres an embed link ive never tried. seems to accept a bunch of formats too

I found this worked best for me

ffmpeg -i Original_File.mpeg -vcodec libx264 -vpre libx264-max -acodec libfaac -vb 700000 -s cif -f flv Flash_Video_File.flv

Additionally, ffmpeg package on fedora was compiled without faac, and I had to download the src.rpm and rebuild it with (rpmbuild –rebuild –with faac ffmpeg*.src.rpm) after downloading the relevant libfaac-devel package to build it with.

Hope this info helps some other people

here’s what i do

ffmpeg -i foo.avi -vcodec libx264 -acodec libfaac -vb 700000 -f flv bar.f4v

i’m sure its not the best, but i does ok. the 2 big plus points:

1. it uses h.264 = much better quality
2. it allows progressive download = starts playing straight away

i use the flowplayer player
