I forget to set the APN at home, so had to guestimate it while wandering about outside in the big scary world. I just put in orangeinternet as the APN and nothing else, and had lovely 3G since. All the other information really does seem to be surplus to requirements.

Funny, as the other day I had to do a factory reset on my G1 after it crashed while I was trying to send a few photos. Really lucky that Android Bloke had to do the same. I really am still mostly clueless when it comes to all this, but I got there in the end!

Well, as Orange identified that fact that they first sent me the wrong SIM card and then provided the APN details to allow me to access the Internet, I assumed that the problem was still their end. You spent all that time calling call-centre muppets and faffing about rather than just Googling for the problem and fixing it.

Dissecting your description of the events leaves me wondering why it took you so long before you thought to Google the problem.
