WordPress 2.7.1 is available! Please update now.
Exciting. Well, sort of, in a geeky kind of way. The last WordPress upgrade introduced automatic upgrades, so this new release, 2.7.1, is the first time that we can test it. I have tried it on one blog, and glad to say that it worked a treat. No more downloading the latest files. then uploading them to the server. It can all be direct via the control panel now. Well done WordPress.org!

Unfortunately, I’m not able to perform the update. On my server, when attempting to update automatically I’m prompted for an FTP login/password combo. So far, I haven’t found any documentation on this behavior.
The FTP and password details are those for you server, I.e. the ones you would have used when you uploaded to WordPress files initially, They are also the same as the details that you need to input to update Plugins. If you have misplaced your FTP details speak with you web host, and they should be able to tell you.
I am starting to wonder if it is sensible to run so many WordPress based sites. I have now updated 12 blogs from WordPress 2.7 to 2.7.1. Still got a few to go. Why do I have so many blogs? Even the automatic update is really of little help. Rather than uploading the files, you have to click and wait. It seems that the only difference is that there is no prompt for a database upgrade. But maybe that is just 2.7.1 that does not require one.
